Here to help. Not to judge.

When people enter Supportiv’s live chats, they are feeling upset, unheard, invalidated, alone, angry, sad, or more. The first person who welcomes them to the small, precision-matched group of peers is Supportiv’s professionally-trained and clinically-supervised Peer Support Moderator. No peer-to-peer conversation ever takes place without a Supportiv moderator safeguarding it in real-time.

Clinically designed curriculum. Extensive training

Supportiv moderators –undergrad and graduate psychology students from around the world– undergo an extensive months-long training designed by Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology, Dr. Alejandro Martinez of Stanford University. They also receive day-to-day oversight, as well as continuous feedback and skill-building, from our Senior Director of Clinical Oversight, Ph.D. Counseling Psychology, and a team of experienced certified peer support specialists.

The Conversational Arc

The Conversational Arc is our proprietary Supportiv methodology, which ties together our moderator best practices in leading, facilitating, safeguarding, vetting hyper-personalized resources, and making timely referrals for stepped-care. It has been optimized from 170 million+ conversational datapoints and dual moderator+user feedback loops.

Here’s how our Moderators actively drive peer-to-peer conversations towards clinical-grade outcomes that improve users’ state of mind.

Venting

Goal – Allows the chat participant to get their story out and feel the emotional catharsis (relief) of releasing their struggle.

Many “peer support” services start and end here: there’s a venter and there’s a listener, who may be a volunteer, lack extensive training, or not even have first hand experience with the topic. Whereas, at Supportiv, venting is just the most basic first step.

Here, venting with active listening builds a sense of safety and allows the user to share their story and explore their moods.

Empathy

Goal – Shows the user that the Supportiv moderator cares, so they feel listened to and validated.

Our patented empathy signalling techniques help build deeper trust, and prepares the chat participant for moving forward into a collaborative conversation on ways to cope and/or resolve their issue.

Compassion from matched peers

Goal – Only in a small group of peers precision-matched for their shared lived experience, can a participant feel truly accepted and understood for what they are going through.

Compassion is experienced when peers with first-hand experience demonstrate a shared understanding that “we are in this together.” Giving and receiving compassion has been proven to reduce self-criticism, improve mental health, and improve quality of life.

New coping skills

Goal – Receiving hyper-personalized resources (articles, videos, podcasts, etc.) that magically match offers users’ expressed needs gives each user new techniques and tips to build skills, confidence, and self-sufficiency.

Collaborative problem solving

Goal – Being led by the moderator through a brainstorming process on ways to reframe thoughts and see novel solutions shows the user they are not stuck. They have agency – meaning they can now see new ways to act to improve their own feelings and situations. Plus, each user’s own personal struggle experience now has a purpose – it enables them to help others in the chat.

By collaboratively formulating an action plan, each chat member gains clarity over what they can do themselves as a next step, and feels a new purpose and direction that replaces the old feeling of being stuck and unsure of what to do.

Healing techniques

Goal – As the moderator helps participants formulate an action plan, they receive more hyper-personalized healing techniques through worksheets, exercises, or videos to watch, providing inspiration that if they keep going after the chat, they’ll see long-term progress. Participants learn that self-efficacy is possible and feel motivated and inspired to address their real-world situations long after they leave the chat.

Navigation onward

Goal – Supportiv’s patented AI can identify other services and organizations, potentially from within our client’s own ecosystem, that specialize in providing what a chat participant has revealed they need. Patented routing capabilities empowers participants to move forward with autonomy.
